I’tikaaf: A Time for Worship and Learning Quran in Ramadan
What is I’tikaaf?
I’tikaaf means staying in the Masjid for a set period with the intention of worshipping Allah. A person who observes I’tikaaf is called a Mutakif. It is a special act of devotion, especially during the last ten days of Ramadan.

Types of I’tikaaf
- Wajib (Obligatory) I’tikaaf: If someone makes a promise to Allah to perform I’tikaaf after fulfilling a wish, it becomes Wajib. The minimum duration is one full day and night, and fasting is required.
- Sunnah Mu’akkadah I’tikaaf: Staying in the Masjid for the last ten days and nights of Ramadan is a strongly recommended Sunnah. If at least one person in a community performs it, the whole community is relieved of the duty. Otherwise, everyone shares the sin of neglecting it.
- Mustahab (Recommended) or Nafl I’tikaaf: This can be for any length of time, even a few minutes. Fasting is not required. This type of I’tikaaf can also be performed during Umrah when entering Masjid Al-Haram, Masjid An-Nabawi, or any other Masjid. Simply enter with the intention of Nafl I’tikaaf and engage in worship while you remain there. (Reference: Easy Umrah Guide: Performing Umra Made Easy)
