Things That Break / do not break the Fast

things that break fast

There are two types of things that break a fast:

  1. Things that only require Qaza (make-up fast) – You just need to fast another day to make up for the broken fast.
  2. Things that require both Qaza and Kaffarah (compensation) – You need to fast another day AND do extra compensation.

Qaza (Make-Up Fast)

If your fast breaks, you must fast one more day in its place.

Kaffarah (Compensation Fast)

If you break the fast intentionally without a valid reason, you must:

  • Fast for 60 days in a row.
  • If you cannot fast for 60 days due to a valid reason (e.g., illness), you can:
    1. Feed 60 poor people two full meals each.
    2. Feed one poor person two meals daily for 60 days.
    3. Give 1.6 kg of wheat (or its value in cash/food) to 60 poor people.
